Challenge
Ohio University sought to modernize its workspace to better attract and retain top faculty and staff. The project required a balance between open, collaborative teaching environments and private offices to support focused work and one-on-one instruction. Spaces needed to accommodate both group learning and individual academic engagement.

Vision
The goal was to create a flexible, hands-on learning environment that encouraged collaboration between professors and students while providing private areas for advising and research. As Dr. Stephen Bergmeier, Professor and Chair of Chemistry and Biochemistry, noted: “The new and enlarged collaborative learning environment will provide more spaces for group learning.”

Collaboration
Building on a five-year partnership, LOTH worked with BHDP and Flad Architects to design a mix of collaborative workspaces, labs, and private offices. GA offices were strategically placed outside labs for better 1:1 instruction, while open forum areas promoted active, hands-on teaching. Furniture solutions included products from Steelcase, Coalesse, and OFS, selected to align with functional and aesthetic goals.

Result
The completed space delivers a dynamic environment that supports collaborative learning, private meetings, and faculty productivity. With 6 benching workstations, 4 unassigned workstations, and 3 conference rooms, the design balances flexibility, technology integration, and comfort, positioning Ohio University as a leader in modern academic spaces.
