Challenge
Ohio University sought to modernize its workspace to better attract and retain top faculty and staff. The project required a balance between open, collaborative teaching environments and private offices to support focused work and one-on-one instruction. Spaces needed to accommodate both group learning and individual academic engagement.

Vision
The goal was to create a flexible, hands-on learning environment that encouraged collaboration between professors and students. At the same time, private areas were provided for advising and research. As Dr. Stephen Bergmeier, Professor and Chair of Chemistry and Biochemistry, noted: “The new and enlarged collaborative learning environment will provide more spaces for group learning.”

Collaboration
Building on a five-year partnership, LOTH collaborated with BHDP and Flad Architects to design a mix of collaborative workspaces, labs, and private offices. The team strategically placed GA offices outside labs to support stronger one-on-one instruction. In addition, open forum areas encourage active, hands-on teaching. LOTH selected furniture from Steelcase, Coalesse, and OFS to align with both functional and aesthetic goals.

Result
The completed space delivers a dynamic environment that supports collaborative learning, private meetings, and faculty productivity. With 6 benching workstations, 4 unassigned workstations, and 3 conference rooms, the design balances flexibility, technology integration, and comfort. As a result, this positions Ohio University as a leader in modern academic spaces.
